Training a Saluki can be a unique challenge due to the breed’s independent and sometimes aloof nature. Unlike more obedient breeds, Salukis were bred to think for themselves while hunting, which means they are not always eager to follow commands. This independence, combined with their intelligence, requires a training approach that is patient, consistent, and above all, positive. Harsh or forceful methods will not work with a Saluki and can actually harm the trust and bond between the dog and owner. Instead, using positive reinforcement techniques such as treats, praise, and play can motivate a Saluki to learn and respond to commands.

Given their natural instincts, it’s important to start training a Saluki from an early age. Puppy socialization classes can be particularly beneficial, helping them become accustomed to various environments, people, and other animals. This early exposure is crucial for preventing shyness or over-cautiousness later in life. Salukis also need mental stimulation to keep them engaged, so incorporating games, puzzles, and varied activities into their training routine can help maintain their interest and focus.

Recall training is one of the most important aspects of training a Saluki, given their strong prey drive and instinct to chase. Teaching a reliable recall can take time, and even with thorough training, Salukis may never be fully trusted off-leash in unsecured areas. Therefore, always ensure that they are in a safe, enclosed space when off-leash to prevent them from chasing after small animals or getting into dangerous situations. Patience is key when training a Saluki; progress might be slow, but with consistent, positive efforts, you can help your Saluki become a well-mannered and responsive companion.
