Pharaoh Hound origins

The origins of the Pharaoh Hound are deeply rooted in ancient history, with a lineage that is believed to stretch back over 5,000 years. This breed is often associated with ancient Egypt, as its likeness is frequently depicted in ancient tombs and artwork, leading many to believe that it was revered by the Pharaohs themselves. However, the true origins of the Pharaoh Hound likely trace back to the Mediterranean, particularly the island of Malta. It is believed that Phoenician traders brought the ancestors of the Pharaoh Hound to Malta around 1000 B.C., where the breed adapted to the island’s rugged terrain and became the Kelb tal-Fenek, or “Rabbit Dog.”

In Malta, the Pharaoh Hound evolved as an adept hunter, primarily used to hunt rabbits in the rocky and harsh landscape. Over centuries, the breed maintained its unique characteristics, including its keen sight, agility, and a remarkable ability to “blush” when excited.
