Otocinclus Catfish

The Otocinclus catfish, commonly known as “Oto,” is a popular freshwater fish species among aquarium enthusiasts due to its peaceful nature and algae-eating habits. These small, social fish are perfect for community tanks, especially those with live plants, as they help maintain a clean environment by consuming algae. Otocinclus are typically found in schools and prefer to be kept in groups of at least six to feel secure and exhibit natural behaviors. They are non-aggressive and get along well with other peaceful species, making them an ideal addition to tanks with tetras, rasboras, or shrimp.

Caring for Otocinclus catfish requires attention to water quality and a proper diet. They thrive in clean, well-oxygenated water with a temperature range of 22°C to 26°C (72°F to 79°F) and a pH between 6.5 and 7.5. Although they primarily feed on algae, supplementing their diet with blanched vegetables like zucchini and algae wafers ensures they get enough nutrients, especially in tanks with limited algae. It’s essential to provide them with hiding spots, such as plants and driftwood, as they appreciate a comfortable, natural environment to explore and rest.
