Otocinclus behavior

Otocinclus, often referred to as “otos,” are small freshwater catfish known for their peaceful behavior and algae-eating habits. These fish are highly valued in planted tanks due to their ability to clean surfaces without harming plants. One of the most distinctive aspects of Otocinclus behavior is their constant activity; they are almost always on the move, searching for algae on leaves, glass, and decorations. Unlike many other algae eaters, otos prefer to be in groups, as they are naturally social and feel more secure when kept in schools of at least six. When they are comfortable, you’ll notice them peacefully grazing together, often sticking to smooth surfaces with their mouths while they feed.

Otocinclus are gentle and non-aggressive, making them an excellent addition to community tanks. They get along well with other peaceful species such as tetras, rasboras, and shrimp. Another important aspect of their behavior is that they are highly sensitive to water quality, so they thrive in well-maintained, stable environments. It’s essential to provide them with plenty of hiding spots, like plants or driftwood, where they can retreat and rest during the day. Though they primarily consume algae, otos also require a varied diet. If algae levels are low, supplement their food with blanched vegetables such as zucchini or high-quality algae wafers to ensure they stay healthy and active. With their calm nature and diligent cleaning habits, Otocinclus can be both functional and charming in any freshwater aquarium.
