Neon Tetra Care

Caring for Neon Tetras is relatively straightforward, making them a popular choice for both beginner and experienced aquarists. These small, vibrant fish thrive in community tanks where they can swim in groups, as they are schooling fish that feel most comfortable in numbers. A minimum of six Neon Tetras is recommended to ensure they display their natural, active behavior. The ideal tank size for a small school is at least 10 gallons, though larger tanks are always preferable.

Neon Tetras prefer water that is slightly acidic to neutral, with a pH between 6.0 and 7.0, and a temperature range of 70°F to 81°F (21°C to 27°C). Soft, well-planted aquariums mimic their natural habitat in the Amazon Basin, providing them with places to hide and explore. Dim lighting is beneficial, as it helps to enhance their iridescent colors and reduces stress. Regular water changes and good filtration are crucial to maintaining clean water, which is essential for their health.

In terms of diet, Neon Tetras are omnivores and will thrive on a varied diet. High-quality flake food, micro-pellets, and occasional live or frozen treats like brine shrimp or bloodworms ensure they receive all the necessary nutrients. It’s important to feed them small amounts multiple times a day rather than one large feeding, as this mimics their natural grazing habits and keeps them active and healthy. With proper care, Neon Tetras can live for 5 to 10 years, bringing a splash of color and lively movement to any aquarium.
