Muskrat Lodges

Muskrat lodges are remarkable structures built primarily from vegetation and mud, providing shelter and protection for these semi-aquatic rodents. Typically located in shallow water, these dome-shaped lodges are made from a variety of plants, such as cattails, reeds, and sedges, which are packed together and reinforced with mud. The lodges serve as a safe haven for muskrats, offering protection from predators like foxes, coyotes, and birds of prey. Additionally, the thick walls of the lodge insulate the interior, helping muskrats survive harsh weather, especially during cold winters.
