Lovebird Cage Setup

Setting up a lovebird’s cage properly is crucial for their health, happiness, and well-being. Lovebirds are active, playful birds that require ample space to move around, so choosing a spacious cage is the first step. The cage should be large enough to allow for flying, with a minimum size of 18x18x24 inches, though bigger is always better. Bar spacing should be no more than half an inch to prevent your lovebird from escaping or getting stuck. A horizontal bar design is preferable, as it provides climbing opportunities, which lovebirds enjoy.

Inside the cage, perches of varying diameters and materials should be provided to ensure foot health and to mimic the natural environment. Natural wood perches are an excellent choice. Include a variety of toys, such as swings, ladders, and chewable items, to keep your lovebird mentally stimulated and physically active. Lovebirds also need a place to retreat, so consider adding a small hut or nest box. Position food and water dishes in easily accessible areas, but not directly under perches to avoid contamination. Additionally, lovebirds enjoy bathing, so a shallow water dish or birdbath should be included. Finally, place the cage in a location that offers plenty of natural light but is free from drafts and direct sunlight. A well-organized and thoughtfully set-up cage will provide a safe, engaging, and comfortable home for your lovebird.
