Creating the ideal housing environment for your guinea pig is crucial for their comfort, well-being, and overall health. Guinea pigs need a spacious cage with enough room to move around, explore, and exercise. A good rule of thumb is to provide at least 7.5 square feet of space for one guinea pig, with more space required for additional guinea pigs. Cages with solid bottoms are preferable to avoid injury, as wire-bottomed cages can cause foot problems like bumblefoot. Additionally, the cage should be placed in a quiet area away from direct sunlight and drafts to ensure a stable, comfortable temperature.

Inside the cage, it’s important to create a stimulating environment with plenty of hiding spots, tunnels, and toys to keep your guinea pig mentally and physically active. Hiding places, such as small huts or tunnels, offer your guinea pig a sense of security and are essential for reducing stress. Bedding should be soft, absorbent, and safe for guinea pigs, such as paper-based bedding or fleece liners. Avoid using cedar or pine shavings, as these can cause respiratory issues due to their strong odors and dust.

Regular cleaning of the cage is necessary to maintain a hygienic environment. Spot clean daily to remove soiled bedding and droppings, and do a full cage clean weekly. This helps prevent the build-up of ammonia from urine, which can be harmful to your guinea pig’s respiratory system. Fresh water and hay should always be available, and food dishes should be cleaned regularly to prevent the growth of bacteria. By providing a well-maintained, spacious, and enriched living space, you can help ensure your guinea pig stays happy, healthy, and engaged.
