A cockatiel cage is more than just a home for your feathered friend; it’s a space where your bird will spend a significant amount of time, so it’s essential to choose and set up the cage thoughtfully. Ideally, the cage should be at least 24 inches wide, 18 inches deep, and 24 inches tall, with bar spacing no more than 1/2 inch to prevent the bird from getting stuck. A spacious cage allows your cockatiel to stay active and mentally stimulated, reducing the risk of boredom and associated behaviors like feather plucking.

Equipping the cage with the right accessories is also crucial. Perches of varying diameters made from natural wood are ideal for maintaining healthy feet and providing exercise. The cage should also contain a variety of toys to keep your cockatiel entertained and mentally engaged. Rotating these toys regularly helps to prevent boredom. In addition to perches and toys, make sure there is a cuttlebone or mineral block available to help your cockatiel maintain a healthy beak. The placement of food and water dishes should be strategic—ideally, they should be positioned away from perches to avoid contamination with droppings. Cleanliness is paramount, so the cage should be easy to clean, with pull-out trays for quick waste removal and regular disinfection.

Location matters too. The cage should be placed in a well-lit area where the cockatiel can interact with the family but also have a quiet space to retreat to for rest. Avoid placing the cage in direct sunlight, drafty areas, or places with extreme temperature fluctuations. Remember that cockatiels are social animals and thrive on interaction, so positioning the cage where your bird can see and hear you will make them feel like part of the family. By paying attention to these details, you can ensure that your cockatiel’s cage is not just a place to stay, but a comfortable and enriching environment that supports their well-being.
