Chinese Hamster cage

When setting up a cage for a Chinese hamster, it’s important to prioritize both space and enrichment. Chinese hamsters are active creatures that love to climb, burrow, and explore, so the cage should offer plenty of room for them to exhibit natural behaviors. Ideally, the cage should be at least 24 inches long and 12 inches wide, with plenty of vertical space to allow climbing. Wire cages with narrow bar spacing (less than 1 cm) are suitable, as they provide ventilation while preventing escapes. However, glass tanks with secure mesh lids are also a popular option, as they contain bedding well and offer a clear view of the hamster’s activities.

In addition to choosing the right cage, the interior setup is just as critical. A good layer of bedding, at least 2-3 inches deep, is necessary for burrowing. The bedding should be made from safe materials such as paper or aspen shavings. Avoid cedar or pine, as these can release harmful oils. It’s also essential to provide a variety of toys, tunnels, and a running wheel with a solid surface to prevent injury. Regular cleaning of the cage, along with maintaining a consistent temperature and a quiet environment, will help keep your Chinese hamster happy and healthy.
